I have to admit, I picked up the The Last Knights movie because of the title and the artwork on the cover. I love knights, those warriors of old. Since I’m at the brink of releasing three medieval novels myself, I thought I might be inspired by the movie. Plus, it stars both Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman. How could it go wrong?

Well, it went wrong in several ways, a fact reflected in the reviews found online. The Last Knights has received as few as one-and-a-half stars and no more than three stars. The beginning of the movie is a true disappointment as it becomes apparent that it is not historically accurate. It isn’t set in any known time or in any known country, making it a sort of quasi-historical science fiction/samurai movie.  But I can tell you this—a Navy SEAL would still love this movie for its strengths, which don’t become apparent until the climax of the plot.

Strength #1: The plot has a twist that actually surprised me. Being a storyteller by trade, it isn’t easy to fool me with a plot twist that actually makes sense.

Strength #2: The ingenuity of the warriors would arouse the admiration of any operative whose work entails overcoming enormous odds.

Strength #3: The theme of honor is driven home in a powerful way through the sacrifices made by those involved.

I can’t say more without spoiling the movie for you. If you’re not into discovering what makes up the heart of a warrior, then this movie isn’t for you. But I enjoyed it for its strengths, and I believe my Navy SEAL buddies would like it for the same reasons.
