I have to admit, I’m a little excited about the upcoming Navy SEAL television series. Who wouldn’t want to watch Navy SEALs in action? The preview, on the other hand, has me asking whether Hollywood isn’t deliberately misrepresenting SEAL operations to give the outside world a skewed representation of what it means to be a SEAL.

What I see in the preview bears little resemblance to how SEALs actually operate. I don’t want to go into detail, but the lack of professionalism and preparation depicted in the series really jumps out at me. A SEAL is never going to “meet his new teammate” (one who isn’t ready/untrained) right as he heads out on a mission. Hell, no. The TV series also incorporates a lot of women on the Team. Don’t get me wrong–I think a woman or two will graduate from BUDs one day soon, but that hasn’t happened yet. On the other hand, the preview does capture the toll team-life takes on family-life.

I think I’ll enjoy the U.S. Navy SEALs series but I caution viewers not to consider it a documentary, by any stretch of the imagination. Lastly, I think Hollywood should have featured my Team 12 and Echo Platoon series, giving viewers a lineup of amazing heroes, not just one or two. http://www.cbs.com/shows/seal-team/
